Your Ears Have Opinions: What Widex's Research Says About Sound Preference

Here's a fun fact: two people can put on the exact same hearing aid, in the exact same room, and walk away with completely different opinions about how it sounds. One says it's perfect. The other says something feels “off,” even though nothing is technically wrong. That's not a fitting problem. It might just be taste.
That's the headline from a set of studies by Widex and its parent group WSA. Turns out, when it comes to hearing aids, there's no single “best” sound — there's just the sound that feels right to you.
Meet the 20/20/60

In two studies — a big online survey of 248 listeners and a real-world trial with 28 more — WSA pitted two very different sound philosophies against each other. In one corner: Widex's time-domain processing, which keeps delay ultra-low and sound as natural as possible (think: “less is more”). In the other: Signia's frequency-domain processing, which turns up the contrast to help speech cut through noise.
The result was basically a three-way tie for “it

Roughly 40% of listeners have a strong opinion — and it splits almost evenly.
About 20% of people really want that natural, low-delay sound. Another 20% want the punchier, more processed sound. And 60% are happy either way. What's wild is that none of it lines up with age, lifestyle, or audiogram — two people who look identical on paper can land in totally different camps. It seems to really come down to personal taste, the same way some people love a bass-heavy playlist and others want it flat and true to the recording.
“It Doesn't Feel Right” Isn't Always a Fitting Problem
WSA's CEO Jan Makela put it simply: even under double-blind testing, you can't tell in advance which camp a new patient will fall into. That's probably part of why some people quietly stop wearing hearing aids that measure perfectly well on paper, or keep coming back for “one more tweak” that never quite lands.
The usual playbook is to keep adjusting the same device — nudge the gain, tune the noise settings, try again. But if someone is simply wired to prefer a different sound philosophy altogether, no amount of tweaking within that one architecture will get them there. Sometimes the fix isn't a better tune-up. It's a different instrument.
This Isn't Unique to Hearing Aids

Honestly, this tracks with how we treat sound everywhere else. Some people crank the bass until they can feel it in their chest; others want the mix exactly as the engineer intended. Some people slap a filter on every photo; others leave it untouched. We're all quietly curating our sensory experience all the time — so why would hearing aids be the one exception?
The Research Backs It Up, Again and Again
This isn't a one-off finding. Widex has run this comparison across several of its own product lines — PureSound, Allure — and the pattern holds: a strong, consistent majority of listeners prefer the natural, low-delay sound once they actually hear it side-by-side with the alternative.
In a global survey of hearing care professionals, 85% agreed that no single hearing aid technology works for everyone — so clinicians already know this intuitively. The missing piece has been building it into the fitting process itself, rather than treating sound preference as an afterthought.
Why It Matters

A hearing aid that doesn't match someone's underlying sound preference is much more likely to end up in a drawer, no matter how impressive its spec sheet looks. Flip that around, though, and the upside is real: match people to the sound design they actually prefer, and you're looking at smoother acclimatization, fewer frustrated follow-up visits, and hearing aids that people actually want to wear.
So maybe the better question for a new wearer isn't just “how well can you hear with this?” It's “does this sound like something you'd actually want to live with?” Because at the end of the day, that's the hearing aid people will actually keep wearing.
